The Series III Land Rover was introduced in 1971, running through until 1985 when it was finally replaced by the coil sprung 90.
Over 440,000 left the Solihull plant, the 1,000,000th Land Rover, a Series III, rolling off the production line in 1976. In truth, little had altered from the old Series IIa although it featured a plastic grille, full synchromesh gearbox and from 1980 got a 5-bearing crankshaft.
The headlights were mounted on the outside of the wings (which were carried over from the late Series IIa models anyway) and the dashboard was moved in front of the driver and made of a tough plastic material. Go anywhere, simple, rugged and tough, they did what was expected of them and survive in hoards, offering basic and cheap transport.
This nicely presented Series III 88-inch was purchased by the vendor in early 2015 as a running vehicle to use and improve. Since acquisition, he has replaced the front half of the chassis, updating numerous related parts along the way. The end result is a very sound example which is ready for work, the most recent improvements being new lights, rear silencer, distributor and coil.
The vendor has retained the original steering wheel which will be included in the sale, the interior being fitted with the far more comfortable deluxe seats. It has covered just 1,000 miles in the last five years, is MOTd until January 2017 and is shortly to become tax exempt.
Prices of Series III Land Rovers appear to have soared of late, falling in line with the similar, if slightly less refined Series II and very basic Series I. Get one while you can.
