Launched in March 1972, the Ford Granada succeeded the Zephyr as Ford's executive car offering.
It received a major make-over in August 1977 as the Granada MkII with its distinctive straight-edged styling and a wider choice of engines. It was further developed in 1982 with a mild facelift and improvements to the drivetrain to reduce noise, vibration and harshness. At first the cars were produced at Ford’s Dagenham plant, but from the 1980s onwards all were produced in Germany.
The most powerful model used the 2.8-litre ‘Cologne’ V6 which developed a useful 160bhp and had features such as air conditioning and a trip computer. Available as a saloon or estate, the most expensive Granada on the price list was the impressive Granada 2.8i Ghia X Estate Automatic, a car literally crammed full of every luxury from Ford’s box of goodies.
Inside, the wood-trim dash was complemented by several acres of velour upholstery. The front seats were electrically adjusted and it came with a sunroof. Externally there were subtle Ghia side badges, a unique 2.8i front bib-spoiler, front fog and spot lamps, mud flaps, alloy wheels, rear wiper, front and rear overriders, chrome strips and a half-length integral chrome roof rack which doubtless brought out the hearse jokes.
This fine specimen was first registered in November 1985 and came into the vendor’s hands in 2012. Unfortunately, we have been unable to speak to the vendor due to illness, so we do not know if the 40,259 indicated miles is the original or not. Judging by the condition of the car, it could be, although the only paperwork present is the V5C and its new MOT which expires in January 2017.
The car started immediately and ran nicely while being moved around for the photos and looked most impressive. Rare, luxurious and practical, it also has a tow-bar and a dog-guard and we wouldn't be surpised if there isn't even a kitchen sink in there somewhere!
