Beginning life in 1916 as an aircraft engine manufacturer, BMW first became involved with motorcycles in 1921 when it began to supply its Max Friz-designed M2B15 flat-twin engine to other bike manufacturers.

In 1923, BMW's first ‘across the frame’ version of Friz’s 486cc boxer engine was launched, its gearbox forming a bolted up unit and the engine featuring circulating oil lubrication when many manufacturers were operating total loss systems. This design set the template for BMW motorcycles from then on, Friz’s legendary boxer engine still being produced in this same configuration well into the 21st century.

In 1954 the successful R51/3, R67/2 and R68 range of Boxer twins were replaced by the new R50 and R69 which retained the excellent engine of the earlier models, but with modified chassis components. These included swing arm rear suspension and Earles-type leading link front forks, the shaft drive now being incorporated inside the right leg of the swing arm suspension.

The R50 and 69 were the choice of discerning buyers who valued excellent trouble-free engineering over the high cost of purchase. Sold in relatively small numbers in the UK due to their expense in comparison to British products, their high initial value and superb build quality mean that the survival rate is high compared to lesser machines which were scrapped years ago.

The R50 on offer here was first registered in Stockport in May 1960 but has been on display in a private collection for many years, an old tax disc and MOT from 1982/83 suggesting that this was the last time it was in use, the mileage then being recorded as 6,615 and the clock now showing only 6,693 miles. Doubtless in need of some recommissioning before use, it is supplied with a long range tank for more miles between filling stations and comes with old green logbook from 1969 and a more modern blue V5. A rare opportunity to own an original patinated bike from the classic touring stable of BMW.
