Norman B2

History

Norman lightweight motorcycles were built by the brothers Charles and Fred Norman, who were based in Ashford, Kent. They initially built bicycles from 1921, and as the business grew, a new company, Norman Cycles was formed. This company began producing motorised transport in 1938, starting with an autocycle and followed by a 125cc machine, both powered by Villiers engines. At their peak, Norman produced 120 motorcycles a week.

After the war, like many small manufacturers, the brothers fitted 150 and 197cc engines to their lightweight machines. These models were advertised with the slogan 'For pleasure and performance' and boasted "big specification features" for the 1952 B2. Fully restored  to original spec, this particular B2 features the 197cc 6E Villiers engine 3-speed gearbox unit fitted in a straight-tube frame with malleable-iron lugs. Front damping is by Norman-designed telescopic hydraulic forks. The foot change gearbox, two-gallon tank and adjustable handlebars make this lightweight an easy bike to ride.

Still on its original, transferable registration number, XMK 573, this is a rare and pretty machine that would make a fascinating addition to any collection.
