Motoring icons do not come more universally celebrated than the Porsche 911. In continuous production since 1963 it has defined the design ethos of ‘progress through evolution not revolution.’

With engineering origins that can be traced back to the humble Beetle, today’s range of Porsche supercars can hit 200mph, yet have close DNA links to the original 25bhp Volkswagen people’s car.

The mainstay of the Porsche range throughout the late Seventies was the 911 SC which was unveiled at the Frankfurt Show in September 1977 and was available in either Coupe or Targa form.

Similar to the existing Carrera 3.0, with the same basic specification, styling, and features, it delivered a flatter torque curve that made the car much easier to drive. In 1979 the SC's engine received modifications increasing the power to 188bhp, improving fuel economy by 10 percent into the bargain. Simple, quick and bulletproof, the SC is widely regarded as the most user-friendly of all the 911 range and good ones are increasingly sought after.

This 1983 911 SC comes from the ‘D series program’ which was the ultimate Sport Carrera development. Revised cam-timing and an increased compression ratio introduced in 1981 gave the flat-six 204bhp at 5,900rpm and a very handy 267ft/lb of torque that peaked at 4,200rpm. These later D series SCs could sprint to 60mph in just 5.7 seconds on the way to a top speed of 146mph with seat-of-the-pants connectivity that modern 911s can only dream of.

Finished in metallic Ruby Red with beige half leatherette interior, AOD 911Y was first registered in April 1983 and is a matching numbers car which has been fitted from new with the optional ‘whale tail’ spoiler and desirable Fuchs alloy wheels. Purchased in July 2013 by a serial Porsche collector as a ‘father and son’ project, the car needed a pair of new sills plus a few body repairs before it was given a glass out respray by Malvern-based paint specialist Tony Williams at a cost of £3,000.

As part of the recommissioning process a new exhaust was fitted along with new heat exchangers. A host of smaller parts such as windscreen rubbers, sunroof guides, seals and mechanisms have also been fitted and an invoice is included that shows that the new clutch fitted in July 2009 has had just 300 miles use. Just prior to the auction it was treated to a major service and check-over in January 2016 by 911 specialists SVP of Droitwich at a cost of £2,150. It is MOTd until December 2016.

The vendor knows that with Porsche SC values the way they are, he should probably hang onto it, but he is determined to realise his dream of Porsche 993 ownership which is why the car is offered for sale today, together with its nice 911 registration number.
