Faster, harder-edged and more driver-orientated than its W107 predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz R129-series SL was launched at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show.

Packed full of cutting-edge technology, its impressively rigid two-door monocoque shell featured an integral roll over bar that deployed in less than a third of a second (if the car sensed an impending flip) and an electric soft top roof.

Known for its sure-footed handling, the R129 featured all-round independent suspension, ABS brakes and power assisted steering. Powered by a variety of six- and eight-cylinder engines all allied to automatic transmission, it was the sports car of choice for many contemporary F1 drivers, Ayrton Senna included.

From the poetic motion of the electrically operated hood to the adaptive suspension with active damping, the cars oozed sophistication with all the latest technology such as airbags, traction control, air con and a superb new five-link rear suspension all as standard.

To commemorate the 40th birthday of the legendary 300SL Roadster that had been unveiled to the world in 1957, Mercedes launched a limited run of its flagship SL model, the 40th Anniversary Special Edition. Just 150 cars were produced in RHD for the UK market in either 500SL or 320SL format.

The cars had either the 322bhp 5-litre V8 or the 231bhp 3.2-litre straight-six 24v with the same performance as the standard models, but packed with every conceivable extra. The Special Edition’s striking Designo Blue/Green variocolour paintwork, blue hood, Xenon headlights and exclusive 6-spoke EVO II 17inch alloy wheels create stunning visual impact, while inside, dark burr walnut and soft grey Designo leather enhance the luxurious ambience.

Further special features include: cruise control; climate control; electric memory seats; electric door mirrors and steering column; rear child seats; rain sensing wipers; Mercedes special radio; boot-mounted CD changer; four airbags; ABS with brake-assist; skid control and Special Edition stainless steel kick-plates.

First registered in May 1998, this fine 320SL has covered less than 76,000 miles from new and comes with an excellent service record comprising 11 stamps to date, the last in July 2015 at 74,913 miles. With only 6 former keepers in its 18-year life, this rare car has evidently been fastidiously maintained and was in fine form at the time of our visit, running very smoothly and performing effortlessly.

It comes with all its original handbooks, two keys, key card and red tag, 11 old MOTs and a current MOT valid until June 2016. The private plate M16 SWG will remain with the vehicle and a stand for the hard top when not in use is also included.

Few cars on the road turn heads quite like the fabulous R129 Series SL Roadsters. They just radiate power and privilege and it seems incredible that they have now fallen to such a low level in value. Another one to buy now while you can still afford to, perhaps?
