A vitally important model for Porsche at a time when 911 sales were flagging, the 944 was launched in 1982 and proved an immediate sensation, press and public alike being bowled over by the brilliant handling, torquey engines and ‘hewn from solid’ build quality.

Initially it came with just one engine option, a 163bhp 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit that was essentially half of the magnificent V8 from the 928. Over the next few years four more engine options were offered, a 189bhp 2.7-litre 16v, a 220bhp Turbo, a 250bhp Turbo S and a normally aspirated 208bhp 3-litre.

This last engine is considered by many to be the best of the bunch, offering the reliability and fuel economy of the smaller-engined model but nearly as fast as the Turbo (0-60 in 5.9 secs and 150mph) and with bags of low down torque – great for quick getaways at the traffic lights Grand Prix!

All three of the high performance models had improved brakes, suspension and aerodynamics that made them sensational driver's cars with fabulous performance, balance and handling – superior to a 911 in many respects.

This 944 S2 was first registered in August 1989 and has covered less than 145,500 miles from new with a good service history comprising 18 stamps to date, the first 12 at Evans Halshaw Porsche of Birmingham up to 83,000 miles and the most recent at 126,000 miles in 2006. The current registered keeper acquired the car in 2007 and has continued to maintain it although the service book has not been stamped.

Invoices on file show that in 2010 at around 140,500 miles the front suspension was overhauled with Koni adjustable strut inserts and new Superflex polyurethane bushes, while the front brake callipers were also refurbished shortly afterwards. In September 2011 at 145,056 miles new cam belts were also fitted along with a new front oil seal and a new oil pump drive. In fact a cursory examination of the history file shows that around £10,000 has been spent to keep the car in good order, an indication of enthusiast ownership.

Always kept garaged in the current nine-year ownership and very little used for the last five years, it is said to run and drive well. It is due to be issued with a fresh MOT in time for the auction, the last ticket having expired in September 2013. Looking very smart in Velvet Red Metallic with a Linen half-leather interior with optional Sports seats, it is also fitted with Porsche Cup alloys which give a most sporting look.

These 944 models are immensely durable cars that can rack up huge mileages with ease. This unusually smart and well-maintained example looks good value at the sensible guide price suggested, especially when you consider what an equivalent 911 is fetching these days. Another one to buy now before everyone else cottons on, perhaps?
