The decision to introduce a completely new car at the bottom end of their range was not taken lightly in the board room at Mercedes-Benz. Finally unveiled in 1982, the new 190 was the most affordable model in the marque's history.

Over £600 million was spent researching and developing the new car, with Mercedes-Benz acutely aware that a failure of such an entry level model could easily bring down the rest of the range and with it, the entire company’s reputation. They needn't have worried!

The 190 was available with airbags, ABS brakes, seatbelt tensioners and other advanced safety features and is now regarded as one of the best Mercedes-Benz cars ever made. It was finally replaced by the much less impressive C-Class in 1993 (which ironically did have a negative effect on their hard-won reputation for engineering excellence).

This November 1988 Mercedes has had just four owners from new and has been with the current keeper since 1996. A thoroughly pampered machine, it has covered only 79,000 miles with no fewer than 21 service stamps to date (an average of one service every 3,800 miles). The last service was in April 2015 with new oil, oil flush, spark plugs, leads, rotor arm, air filter, fuel filter and distributor cap at a cost of £300.

Graphite Grey with a blue cloth interior, it has been subtly lowered and rides on an expensive set of deep-dish retro alloys which cost around £1,000 although the original wheels are also included in the sale if preferred. Other goodies include the original radio cassette, electric windows and an electric sunroof. Supplied with all its original handbooks and an MOT until August 2016, it is described by the vendor as being “in fantastic condition inside and out” and will be driven some 50 miles to the sale.

Totally classless and timelessly elegant, the 190E is a sure-fire collector’s car of the future and prices are rising fast. This pampered low mileage cracker, from long term ownership, looks an absolute steal at the modest guide price suggested.
