The sharp and sassy E30 series of BMW compact saloons and coupes ran from 1982 until 1994 and for many enthusiasts were the last of the real driver-focused models from BMW.

Later 3-Series became increasingly heavy, and although regular injections of extra power made them faster, they lost much of the pep and brio of the simpler and lighter models

This well cared for BMW 318i Cabriolet Automatic is one of just 200 Motorsport Design Editions. First registered in August 1991, the already sharp lines of the BMW E30 convertible were enhanced by special paintwork in Neon Blue metallic, the car sitting on typically period 15” BBS alloy cross-spoke wheels.

On the inside BMW had specified Recaro sports seats trimmed in Anthracite/Blue cloth (Code 463) piped blue which was unique to this special edition. Other items picked from the factory options list included green tinted glass, central locking, lockable illuminated glove box, padded front roof pillars, leather sports steering wheel, power windows, electric door mirrors, fuel consumption gauge, service interval indicator, analogue quartz clock and a toolbox in the boot lid.

At the heart of the car is BMW's 1,796cc four-cylinder engine which produced 113bhp in a very smooth manner thanks to its five-bearing fully counterbalanced crankshaft, BMW quoting a top speed of 116mph and 0-60mph time of 12 seconds.

Serviced just 3,500 miles ago at 144,998 miles, J8 FKR has been well maintained from new. The service book is stamped to 137,455 miles, detailing both BMW and specialist garage attention, the engine having had a new cambelt fitted in July 2013 at 130,061 miles and a new Mohair hood added in September 2013 at a cost of £650.00.

The history file includes 18 old MOT certificates, the BMW manual pack, service booklet and radio cassette manual while still attached to the centre console is an original Motorola mobile phone – how Yuppie is that?

MOTd until May 2016, this very smart limited edition BMW Convertible is just the thing to use every day over the coming summer months.
