The W113 Mercedes-Benz had a protracted birth. The management of the time realised that there was too large a gap between the heavy and somewhat underpowered 190 and the fabulous Gullwing 300SL.

Early developments of a higher performance model were shelved while more important changes to the mainstream S Class range were focussed on, however the production techniques used in these models formed the basis of the wonderful Paul Bracq-designed SL roadsters, complete with their distinctive ‘Pagoda’ hard tops which came to market in 1963.

In all, by 1971, nearly 49,000 had been made, gaining increasing amounts of power as the years passed thanks to larger engines using the multi-port mechanical fuel-injection technology carried across from the Mercedes-Benz diesel engines. More than just a pretty face, a 230SL manual was driven to victory in one of Europe’s toughest rallies, the Spa-Sophia-Liege in 1963.

This 230SL Manual is an original UK market car that has been languishing in storage for many years. As there are no documents with the car there is not much we can say about it just yet, but the vendor has applied for a V5C which should be here in time for the sale.

The vendor states that he has a copy of the factory data card and confirms that all the numbers match those still on the car (chassis, body and engine). Genuine Mercedes rear quarter panels have been fitted to the car at some point although they have yet to be painted. The clock is showing some 46,500 miles but this obviously can’t be warranted.

Complete with hard top, it has the potential to be a prime example of this iconic ‘60s roadster, especially as so many panels and small parts can still readily be sourced direct from Mercedes-Benz. Prospective bidders are strongly advised to view the car in person to assess the amount of work required, as it needs rather more than just a quick coat of paint to get it ready for the summer. It is being offered here without reserve and will make a most rewarding project for someone.

AMENDMENT: The vendor has not had time to apply for a V5 for this car, although would like to stress that it is a matching numbers vehicle with the factory data sheet to prove it. It will therefore be the responsibilty of the buyer to arrange for a new V5 document though the normal channels.
