The 104 was the first Peugeot small car not to be offered with a diesel engine, and the first to be produced at their Mulhouse plant, remaining in production for a full 16 years from 1972 to 1988.

Paolo Martin’s svelte design launched as a 3-door Coupe in 1974, following on from the compact 4-door hatch of 1972. The Coupe used the same 954cc engine as the 4-door, later short-wheelbase Coupe models using designations beginning with a Z such as ZL and ZA. 1977 proved to be the 104’s best year with 190,000 being produced. There followed a facelift in 1978, including an upgrade to the rear light cluster featuring incorporated rear reversing lights and a power increase for the 1,124cc version.

By the time production finally ended in 1988 with the introduction of the legendary 205, 1.62 million 104s had been built, of which only about one-fifth were coupes. DVLA figures show that fewer than half-a-dozen are still registered on UK roads, a major decline from the 1990s, making this a very rare survivor indeed.

This fantastically original Peugeot 104 Coupe was first registered in July 1979 and is the 1978 facelift specification. Although it has a ZA badge on the back, the original purchase invoice and the V5 refer to it as a ZL so you will have to make your own minds up what model it really is and they were virtually identical anyway.

The car has had only two owners, the first right up until 2005 when it was acquired for the Stondon Museum Collection. Having covered a warranted 101,282 miles from new, the car is said to run and drive well with current MOT until August 2016. It comes complete with its original bill of sale, original period sales brochure, spare keys and four old V5 registration documents.

A rare and intriguing little car, this delightful Coupe will certainly turn a few curious heads on the summer show circuit. Be a little different, grab the keys to this beautifully proportioned orange Seventies gem and get yourself noticed!
