History

The G80 model announced in 1949 was based on the 348cc Matchless G3 from 1935, a machine which had gained a deserved reputation as a robust and reliable military mount in WWII. An OHV four stroke 82.5 x 93mm single provided a tractable 23bhp @ 5400rpm from the 5.9:1 compression engine which was increased to 7.3:1 in 1957. It featured a vertically-split crankcase, built up crankshaft, iron barrel and head and an alloy rocker box with a cover for tappet adjustment. Transmission was via the popular foot change Burman 4-speed gearbox.

Few changes were made over the 14-year life of the model, although the steel cradle frame with the 'S' suffix denoting 'sprung frame' was  introduced 1949, making it effective as a competition tool. Single-leading-shoe drum brakes, the patented Teledraulic front forks and distinctive in-house designed 'candle stick' rear dampers (later replaced by 'jampots' ) provide a safe and comfortable ride. The high standard of finish learned from Sunbeam with minimal plating all contribute in making the G80S a pleasure to own.

This bike was supplied to the current vendor by Velocette specialist Ivan Rhodes in 1987. It is said that the engine was rebuilt by Rhodes prior to the sale but there is no documentation to support this. The bike has been stored since purchase with oil poured down the bore and has not been ridden but was said to be running well when put into store. It will now need recommissioning before use.
