History
Designed by the legendary Fabio Taglioni, the first Ducati overhead-camshaft single – the 100 Gran Sport – appeared on the racetrack in 1954 and soon proved unbeatable in its class. It had an air-cooled cylinder inclined forward 10 degrees from vertical, gear primary drive, wet-sump lubrication, battery ignition and camshaft drive by vertical shaft and bevel gears.
Steadily developed on the track, it gradually grew in capacity and road-going versions were made available to an eager public. By 1956 the engine had grown to 175cc and the 'Silverstone' (as it was known in the UK) was capable of more than 80mph. Astonishingly quick for its time, it helped to establish the giant-killing reputation long enjoyed by Ducati’s miniature masterpieces.
In 1959 the engine capacity was increased to 204cc for the Elite and 200SS models, with top speed now in excess of 85mph. The GT 200 was introduced in 1962 for a short production run and the model is seldom seen. Lightweight, nimble, sure-footed and with a gem of an engine that is spine-tingling when it comes on cam, these little Dukes are a delight to ride.
First registered in the UK in July 2001, this 1962 GT 200 has been kept as part of a private collection and has seen show use only in recent years, covering minimal mileage as can be seen from the old MOTs that accompany it. Taxed and MOTd until August 2008, it is said to be in near concours condition with excellent paintwork, alloy and chrome. The colouring and detailing is all thought to be correct and original and the bike comes with a certificate from the Italian Owners Motorcycle Club confirming its provenance. A Ducati owner's workshop manual and a copy of Mick Walker's book on Ducati singles restoration are also included.
