History

Launched in 1976 as British Leyland's answer to the safety and emission requirements which were strangling the macho TR6, the TR7's wedge-shaped body, sawn off rump and pop up headlights divided opinion like no Triumph before or since. But if the body, penned by Harris Mann, was shockingly new, the underpinnings were reassuringly familiar. The 105bhp 2-litre, four-cylinder engine and powertrain were basically Triumph Dolomite, while the suspension comprised MacPherson struts at the front and a live axle at the rear.

Despite its quirky looks, the TR7 had decent performance (112mph) and sold well, staying in production until 1981 by which time 112,000 had been made. Rust-proofing was not the car's strong suit though, and now surprisingly few examples remain.

This particular 1977 car is a rare survivor indeed, having had just one owner from new and driven only 32,000 miles. Said to be in excellent, original condition throughout, it has just had a complete braking system overhaul with new front calipers, pads and pipework and new rear wheel cylinders. It comes complete with its original Passport to Service book and various other bits of history. A more original and better preserved example it would surely be hard to find.
