In 1980 Rolls-Royce refreshed itself for a new decade with a new attitude to wealth and prestige with the introduction of its Silver Spirit. The model was closely allied to the slightly more rounded and sporting Bentley Mulsanne.

Mechanically, the car was little changed from its predecessor, the magnificent Silver Shadow. Power came from the same 6,750cc V8 engine of advanced alloy construction, coupled to a GM400 3-speed automatic gearbox with electric power assistance. All the Shadow II chassis upgrades were incorporated, including independent suspension all round, with anti-roll bars and self-levelling ride control. The rack-and-pinion steering was of course power assisted, as were the disc brakes, which were now ventilated at the front.

What best defined Rolls’ subtle change in stance was the new monocoque body. Though only three inches longer, two inches wider, and with one extra inch of wheelbase, the Spirit looked rakishly low and wide. Weight was saved by the use of aluminium in the doors, bonnet and boot lid, and the area of glass was hugely increased (by more than 30%) from the Shadow. There was a little more dash with the dignity. The Silver Spirit was, and remains, very much a Rolls-Royce.

First registered in May 1987, this Spirit has covered less than 70,000 miles from new and comes with a good service history comprising 19 stamps to date, the last at 65,484 miles in August 2012, plus many supporting invoices. Finished in dark blue metallic with a cream hide interior piped in blue, the car is said to be in good and original condition throughout and to drive very well with that uncanny smoothness and effortless thrust that is uniquely Rolls-Royce. Supplied with all its original handbooks and the aforementioned service history, it is MOTd until the end of August 2016.

Motoring doesn’t get more luxurious than this and it is remarkable just how affordable these magnificently crafted machines have become in the current market.
