Porsche introduced the 944 in 1982, using the 924 as a starting point but radically improving the car in many areas.

This included ditching the old VW engine and replacing it with a new 2.5-litre straight-four that was effectively half of the 5.0-litre V8 in the 928 supercar. Producing 163bhp and with bags of torque, it could propel the 944 to 137mph. With its front engine, rear transaxle layout, the 944 was a fabulously well-balanced machine that had the measure of the contemporary 911 in many respects.

The comprehensive service history suggests that this black 1985 Porsche 944 has been well looked after for much of its life, the well-stamped service book showing numerous visits to AFN and specialist Porsche garages, the last of which took place at 61,877 miles in 2002. A further bill shows that a new clutch kit was subsequently fitted in October 2005 at a cost of £373, the mileage at this point having risen to just under 67,000 miles.

The online MOT history, substantiated by no fewer than 20 old MOTs in the file, confirm that it was last on the road in 2010, the car having now covered 74,423 miles from new – a mere walk in the park for these robust machines. The original driver's handbook is also included.

Sadly, a period of poor storage sees the car in its present state, representing as it does an interesting and worthwhile project for improvement. We are advised that it starts, drives, stops and steers so it looks like an excellent basis from which to start. It is on offer here at no reserve so may yet prove to be the bargain of the day, the 944 being a model that has begun to shoot up in value of late.
