Sold between 1970 and 1978, the Michelotti-styled Triumph Stag was designed to be a gentleman's sports tourer to compete head-on with rivals like the Mercedes SL.
A full four-seater, it was powered by an all-new Triumph-designed 2,997cc V8 engine that produced 145bhp, sufficient to propel the car to a heady 118mph with a wonderfully woofly exhaust note. With independent suspension all round, front disc brakes, power steering and a Borg-Warner 3-speed automatic gearbox, it had sophisticated road manners and has always ranked as one of Britain’s most popular classic cars.
From long term ownership and after a lengthy period off the road, this 1973 Stag Automatic has recently been recommissioned with a comprehensive brake overhaul which has included new rear shoes and expanders and new pistons, seals and pads at the front. A full carburettor rebuild kit returned the car to running condition along with a new battery and four new tyres.
Described as a sound example with its original hard top, the vendor informs us that apart from several areas of surface corrosion that had developed under its cloth cover during its period of dry storage, it looks in reasonably good shape. It has just passed its MOT, although the vendor adds that as it hasn't covered any distance on the road for some time, it could no doubt do with some futher recommissioning before being pressed into active service.
This essentially sound example looks like an excellent entry level Stag with potential for further improvement.
