First shown at the 1950 Earls Court Motor Show, the Ford Zephyr Six shared its purposeful silhouette with two other models, falling between the four-cylinder Consul and the slightly more upmarket Zodiac.

Together, the trio became known as the ‘Three Graces’ and all are masterpieces of coolly understated Fifties chic, perfectly encapsulating the restrained elegance that austerity Britain could do so well. Dignified and perfectly proportioned, they are the automotive equivalent of Dior's 'little black dress', sculptural proof of the old maxim that less is often so much more.

Powered by a six-cylinder 2,262 cc engine producing 68bhp, the Zephyr Six could hit 80mph with ease and cost a modest £842 at launch. Suspension was by coil springs at the front and a live axle with half elliptic springs at the rear. Not only a huge success in the market, it also boxed far above its weight in competition – in 1953 a Zephyr Six driven by Maurice Gatsonides famously won the Monte Carlo rally, pushing a Jaguar Mk VII into second place in the process.

Dating from late 1954, this sound Zephyr Six has well preserved bodywork that has been repainted burgundy and beige to match its particularly appealing interior, which has nicely patinated red leather upholstery and a classically minimalist ‘50s dash. The well-presented engine bay houses a Kenlowe fan, alternator conversion and a stainless steel exhaust, the Zephyr having been purchased as a car to use and enjoy, more recent excursions being the family holiday and a 112 mile Pembroke Classic Car Club reliability rally.

The vendor will give the car an oil service prior to the sale, and although exempt from such things, plans to MOT test the car to demonstrate its sound overall condition. Ten old MOTs on file show that the car has covered some 15,000 miles since 2006, testament to the usability of this fine Ford cruiser.

Perfectly suited to our new age of austerity, it still brings a rare touch of class to the highways in much the same manner that it did some 55 years ago.
