The Michelotti-designed Stag and 2000 models gave Triumph a clear style consistency and when the Spitfire was starting to show its age, it too was given a Michelotti makeover.

The new Spitfire MkIV was unveiled at the end of 1970, getting a completely re-designed cut-off rear end and squared off front. The interior was also given the treatment: a proper full-width dashboard was provided, putting the instruments ahead of the driver rather than over the centre console, which was upgraded yet again with the usual Triumph wood finish from 1973 onwards.

The engine continued at 1,296cc, although the compression ratio had increased to 9:1 to cope with a slightly taller final drive but by far the most significant change was to the rear suspension, which was de-cambered and redesigned to eliminate the unfortunate tendencies of the original swing-axle design. By 1974 the engine had been enlarged to 1,493cc and the name changed to the Spitfire 1500, the last of the breed rolling off the assembly lines in August 1980, sadly with no replacement in sight.

This smart and well-loved MkIV was acquired by the vendor in 2010. It had been comprehensively restored by a previous owner between 2005 and 2007 and comes with a huge file of bills and invoices, mainly from Rimmer Brothers, which show that over £9,000 had been spent.

A number of upgrades were incorporated, including a set of chrome wire wheels with new tyres, electronic ignition, a wood-finish dashboard and a stainless exhaust. Tax exempt and wearing black number plates like it should, this well presented early MkIV is due to have an oil service prior to the sale and is MOTd until April 2017.

Since completion, it has been used on high days and holidays, mainly on Pembrokeshire classic car runs and events around Haverford West. It has always proved reliable and great fun and is ready for a new owner to enjoy straight away.
