BMW added a new coupe model to its range in 1976, the 6-Series E24. Long, low and rakish with distinctive ‘shark nose’ frontal styling and an elegant thin pillared cabin, it was a natural rival to the Porsche 928 and the Jaguar XJS.

The chassis platform was shared with the outstanding E12 5-Series, widely considered to be the best handling saloon in the world at the time. A range of straight-six engines were available from a 180bhp 2.8-litre to a fabulously smooth and potent fuel-injected 215bhp 3.5-litre which gave the car a top speed of 140mph.

All were beautifully built in the finest BMW tradition with superb performance and handling characteristics and luxuriously trimmed interiors. One of the most desirable cars of the ‘80s, the E24 remained in production until 1989 with over 86,000 sold in total (the vast majority in left-hand drive).-

With just three previous owners and coming from the final year of production, this June 1989 BMW 635CSi Automatic is one the rare Highline Editions featuring a full black leather interior, larger bumpers and small wheel arch extensions. It is being sold with an original set of cross-spoke TRX alloy wheels, although the car currently sits on a set of after-market alloy wheels with low profile tyres.

On offer from a deceased estate, it was put away in 2003 and has remained unused since. A fine covering of dust obscures the Zinnober Red paintwork which looks like it would respond well to a good cut and polish and the black leather interior looks to be in good order. The lusty six-cylinder has been coaxed into life with some fresh petrol and idled smoothly while on site at Brightwells, although the car has yet to be driven and will obviously require recommissioning and a new set of rubber before use.

The odometer shows 111,251 miles, although there is insufficient paperwork to substantiate this figure, the document file including a number of bills and invoices and four old MOTs. Here to be sold, it is offered at no reserve so the highest bidder buys the car, the icing on the cake being the personalised registration number LIL 4100 which is included in the sale.
