One of the most brilliant things about the grey Ferguson tractor was that its plough was an integral part of the tractor’s design, working in tandem with the hydraulic system driven from the tractor’s transmission.

The concept of a range of equipment designed specifically to fit a particular make of tractor was new to farming, previous machinery being made to do the job whatever the source of power. This new approach spawned a whole raft of essential kit for the grey Fergy, including saw benches, post hole borers, cranes, loaders and implements, all designed to fit simply onto the host machine.

Across the Atlantic, Massey Harris had made their name manufacturing agricultural equipment, in particular threshing and grain harvesting machines. When they joined forces with Ferguson in 1953 to form the Massey Harris Ferguson company (later shortened to just Massey Ferguson), it was but a small leap for the company to introduce its own range of harvesting equipment designed with its own tractors in mind.

The Massey Ferguson 20 baler as offered here was one such item, becoming the universal baler of choice in the ‘60s and ‘70s and seen on virtually every mixed farm in the country. Subsequently rendered obsolete with the invention of the telehandler which enabled the efficient manipulation of the massive round bales that we know today, these compact machines are still popular amongst smallholders and horse enthusiasts, producing small bales that can be lifted by hand.

The vendor of this stunning example went to town when he stripped this one for restoration, replacing the knives, numerous bearings and fitting it with new tyres. The metalwork was painted in the correct shade of two-pack paint and new decals completed the 'factory fresh' look.

Used to display at local shows, it is described as being in good working condition and would make a fabulous addition to any tractor collection, or could be put to work doing the job for which it was originally designed. This immaculate baler looks like just the thing to attach to one of the stunning tractors on offer in the sale today.
