When new, the MGB roadster was seen as less sporting than the nimble, slightly smaller MGA which it replaced.

But MG's affordable ‘B’ had a roomy cockpit, good legroom and a relatively large boot. The styling was excellent, deceptively simple but well-proportioned from all angles, with the hood up or down. Back in 1962, it was pretty quick, its top speed of 108mph and 0-60mph acceleration in 12.1sec enabling it to outpace ordinary traffic. It sold in large numbers and, from 1965, a fixed-head GT only served to widen the appeal of this charismatic little sportscar.

The August 1971 Roadster has covered just 535 miles since a full ground up restoration by a gentleman who had owned the car for 25 years. The restoration included new sills, new wings, new floors, new bonnet and a new fuel tank. The engine was rebuilt with new pistons, a reground crankshaft, new big and small end bearings, a refaced flywheel, new cam bearings, new oil pump assembly, new clutch, new clutch master and slave cylinder, new alternator, new wiring loom and the fitment of electronic ignition. Much of the suspension was also renewed.

All glass including the windscreen was replaced with new items. The dash was repainted in the correct black crackle finish. The ‘B’ was then treated to a new hood and new hood cover together with new carpets. The car also comes with a new sporty leather covered steering wheel and a leather gear stick knob. The boot area was also newly carpeted. The correct Rostyle wheels were refurbished and all four wheels are set off by chrome surround trims.

A desirable overdrive model, it comes with a thick wad of bills that total in excess of £12,000. The restorer was of the opinion that if he allowed £10 per hour for his labour, the total would have been well in excess of £15,000. With an MOT until June 2016, this lovely ‘B’ is on the button and ready to go and show.

AMENDMENT - This lot does not include a currrent V5C document as was described in this text.
