Sold between 1970 and 1978, the Michelotti-styled Triumph Stag was designed to be a gentleman's sports tourer to compete head-on with rivals like the Mercedes SL.

A full four-seater, it was powered by an all-new Triumph-designed 2,997cc V8 engine that produced 145bhp, sufficient to propel the car to a heady 115mph with a wonderfully woofly exhaust note. With independent suspension all round, front disc brakes and power steering, it had sophisticated road manners and has always ranked as one of Britain’s most popular classic cars.

Produced in 1977, this Tahiti blue Stag with manual gearbox and overdrive was bought by the vendor in 2013 from the wife of his boss at work. Due for retirement, he was looking for a project to keep his hands busy and soon commenced on a thorough renovation of what was in effect a sound and usable example to start with.

He has kept a comprehensive spreadsheet of all purchases relating to the car, cross referenced to the mass of bills held in the history file. The total expenditure on new parts and a full respray totals more than £7,370. The car was stripped and sent to his local paint shop who fitted a new door skin and inner and outer rear wheel arch repair panels. They then resprayed the car in the correct and original shade of Tahiti blue.

Photographs on file show the progression of work, the spreadsheet detailing the myriad of small parts that have gone into the rebuild. The interior was restored with new squab foams, seatbelts, carpets and seals, the list going on and on. A new hood was fitted by a firm in London who also restored the hood frame and it comes with a hard top and sits on refurbished wheels.

The document file includes a handbook, CD repair manual and Haynes manual and the car is due to have a fresh MOT in time for the sale.

Potentially available for little more than the cost of the new parts fitted over the last two years, this usable Stag is soon to become tax exempt and with its desirable manual overdrive gearbox looks like an excellent way to enjoy some top-down classic motoring this summer.

AMENDMENT: The vendor has been unable to obtain a fresh MoT prior to sale.
