The Series 3 Land Rover was produced from 1971 to 1985 and had many detail improvements over the outgoing S2 model including synchromesh on all four forward gears.
Naturally it once again proved very popular with the British Armed Forces and their vehicles often had improved suspension components and a heavier duty chassis. A most successful model was the air-portable Lightweight S3, a stripped out half-ton vehicle on an 88-inch wheelbase.
Dating from 1972, this particular Lightweight S3 served with the military until August 1982 when it was demobbed and registered for civilian use (hence the ‘Y’ registration). Originally a 2.25-litre petrol model, about four years ago it was fitted with a more modern 2.5Tdi engine from a Discovery for improved performance and economy.
Recently fitted with a new canvas soft top, it also has a hard top although this will need to be collected from the Welshpool area if desired. With one registered keeper since 2010, it is said to run and drive well with an MOT until April 2017 and no doubt has years of faithful service ahead of it.
