The Series III Land Rover was introduced in 1971 and ran until it was replaced by the coil-sprung 90 in 1985 by which time over 440,000 had been produced. As testament to the genius of the original concept, the millionth Land Rover rolled off the production line in 1976.

In truth the S3 was little altered from the Series IIA, featuring a new plastic grille, full synchromesh gearbox and from 1980 a 5-bearing crankshaft. The headlights were mounted on the outside of the wings, a carry-over from the late series IIA models, and the tough plastic dashboard was moved in front of the driver.

This 1984 model was one of the last leaf-sprung Land Rovers to leave the Solihull production line and was first registered on 20th August that year. Originally a regular 88-inch model with the 2 ¼-litre diesel engine, it has been upgraded with a later 200Tdi 2.5-litre diesel engine which offers significantly more pulling power. In addition, the conversion also comes with a Turbo and manifolding, although at the present time these have not been fitted.

Over the last two years, the car has received a great deal of attention, including the addition of an Ashcroft transfer box which gives higher overall gearing in high ratio. The gearbox has also been overhauled along with a reconditioned differential. It has also had a new clutch, stainless exhaust, Kenlowe fan, four new parabolic springs and uprated shock absorbers.

The engine has been fully serviced with a new cam belt and waterpump, the brakes overhauled and the chassis comprehensively waxoiled. To cap it all, a set of new Goodyear Wrangler tyres have recently been fitted too.

The mileage showing on the odometer is 91,000 miles, a rather academic figure given the recent reconditioning that has taken place. The vendor has kept all of the receipts which total some £3,600 and this extremely usable and sensibly modified example is MOTd until June 2017 and looks exceptional value at the suggested guide price.
