The Series II Land Rover arrived in 1958, looking much more contemporary than its predecessor thanks to the curved ‘barrel-shaped’ sides which were the work of David Bache, Rover’s chief stylist.

The tough ladder chassis incorporated numerous detail changes, improvements which made the new vehicle significantly better in daily use than any of the earlier Series Land Rovers. The steering was completely redesigned, a major step forward as anyone who has driven a Series I and II back-to-back will confirm and the track was widened for better stability and off-road performance. The bulkhead was modified to allow for new ‘pendant type’ pedals which were easier to use with wellies on, and best of all the engine was updated with overhead valves and an increase in capacity to 2,286cc.

The Series IIa appeared in 1961, although the updates were very minor in this case, the earlier model being distinguished by its stepped front apron and hinge arrangement on the bulkhead mounted air vents. This basic formula was to continue until 1984 when the much needed coil-sprung 90 appeared on the scene.

It is relatively unusual to come across a Series II these days as they were made for less than three years and most led hard lives as working vehicles. This 1960 Series II petrol has lived with its long-term keeper for the last 16 years. He has kept it up and running over the period, ensuing that it has been ready to go and MOTd at all times although in practice he has rarely found time to use the vehicle, hence the reason for sale.

It has recently had a light recommissioning which has included fitting new front brakes, including drums, shoes, cylinders and hoses as well as some remedial repairs to the bulkhead. Serviced and MOTd in May of this year, it is fitted with a useful tow bar and is ready for work or play.
