The Dodge WC Series was one of the most successful military vehicles of all time and is often thought of as the Jeep's 'big brother'. It came in a wide variety of body styles including an ambulance and a station wagon. However the most popular was the weapons carrier, a 3/4-ton 4x4 truck of outstanding versatility.

Power came from a Dodge 230Ci side-valve engine (3.8-litre) producing 92bhp at 3,200rpm and considered to be absolutely indestructible. It has a four-speed gearbox, with first being a 'crawler' ratio, and separate selection of four-wheel drive.

This particular vehicle has been owned by the vendor for the last ten years and kept as part of a small private collection in Herefordshire. The collection has its own dedicated mechanic and all vehicles are maintained to a high standard.

The vendor was told that the vehicle had been fitted with a new factory engine (which are still available in their original army crates) shortly before he acquired it. He was also told that the vehicle had crossed the Channel for the D-Day landings in 1944, but there is insufficient documentary evidence to verify this.

Only about 1,500 miles have been covered in the current ownership and no significant maintenance has been needed. The vehicle is generally in very good order but the fuel gauge does not work. During our visit to take these photos we were treated to an invigorating blast down the local lanes and can confirm that the engine sounds very healthy and the old warhorse still performs strongly.

The owner had been planning to take the Dodge to his tea estate in Sri Lanka where he now spends an increasing amount of time but unfortunately the Sri Lankan customs have resolutely refused to permit this, hence the reason for sale. As part of the planned export the owner bought from Dallas Autoparts (who can supply all Dodge parts) what is termed a 'five year spares package' which cost £420 and which is included in the sale. Other items included are: a full canvas hood and side panels in reasonable condition, together with its metal frame; a canvas rifle cover; two jerry cans; wheel changing kit; a canvas water bucket and a very detailed workshop manual.

These gun carriers are huge fun with great character and are still extremely practical load luggers. A further advantage is that they are exempt from the MOT test, although 'USK' has always been maintained in roadworthy condition. Insurance is also incredibly cheap and the current owner pays just £75 per annum for comprehensive cover.
