This delightful Palm Green four-door A35 was purchased new by Mrs Gladys Spawforth of Leigh-on-Sea in 1958 from her local dealer.
A letter from her nephew states that due to ‘age and ill health’, she barely used the car, covering only 6,000 miles before putting it away until 1974 when ownership passed to him. Having no use for such a vehicle, he sold it to Mr West in Grays, Essex, who kept it until 1984 when it came into the hands of the vendor.
Three old MOTs from the time of Mr West’s ownership show that he also barely used it, the mileage increasing from 6,324 in 1975 to 7,063 by 1980. The vendor acquired the car in 1984 as an ultra-low mileage example in need of some recommissioning.
Twenty MOTs on file show how the mileage subsequently increased from 7,511 in 1990 to the paltry 7,854 miles it displays today, the genuine distance covered from new.
The comprehensive history file lists another major recommissioning in 2007, £1,030 being spent on the brakes and a new petrol tank. Its current MOT expires in May 2019 with three minor advisories (two for tyres and a slightly worn n/s kingpin), the car having had a £581 service and brake overhaul as recently as June this year.
With lots of additional paperwork including a current V5C, old style logbook, buff logbook, letters, invoices, an original brochure and club magazines, this highly original A35 with under 8,000 miles under its wheels looks like an opportunity not to be missed.
Proceeds from the sale are being used to support the philanthropist owner’s personal charity which supports Education, Healthcare, Heritage and Arts within an 80-mile radius of his Herefordshire home.
