The R4 was Renault’s answer to the Citröen 2CV and was hugely successful, with over 8m being produced over its 33-year lifespan.
This 1986 1,108cc example was imported in 2013 by Andrew Bremner and immediately failed its MOT. Not to be deterred, Mr Bremner had the car knocked into shape (welding mostly) and registered the car with the number C872 DDE.
The car had already covered 180,000km when Mr Bremner bought it, but there are plenty of receipts from its French owner to show that he had kept up with its servicing. Over the next couple of years Mr Bremner added another 2,000km before the car was laid up in 2015.
As you can see, Mr Bremner liked to have fun with his cars and the Renault was dressed up as a homage to France’s (incorrect) answer to Sherlock Homes: Inspector Jacques Clouseau, hero – if that’s the word - of the 1960's Pink Panther films. The Clouseau-esque additions may not be to everyone’s taste but at least they would be easy to remove.
The car passed its last MOT (2014) with minor advisories, although it is now in need of some more welding (“they’re all like that, mate.”). The new owner will then be rewarded with a very practical and fun to drive motor car which is offered at no reserve. Just make sure you have rheum to store it!
