The Fordson 5cwt van was based on the Ford Model Y saloon, the first Ford specifically designed for markets outside the USA and produced in Britain from 1932 onwards. Powered by a 933cc 8hp sidevalve engine mated to a three-speed gearbox, it was capable of 60mph and 32mpg. Costing just £100 it took the UK market by storm, soon selling more than all its competitors combined.
It was also available in 5cwt standard panel van form which proved very popular with small businesses. After the war it became known as the E04C and was badged as a Fordson. In 1948 it was treated to some minor styling tweaks and renamed the E494C, in which form it remained in production until 1954 when it was replaced by the 400E Thames van. Survivors are now very rare and quite highly sought after.
First registered in June 1950, this van was acquired in good running order by the current vendor in Skipton, North Yorkshire, in 1987. Brought back to Wales it was promptly parked in a dry garage and has not turned a wheel since. Recently fitted with a new battery and given some fresh fuel it is said to start and run but will obviously need some recommissioning before it can be pressed back into use.
It is supplied with its original 1950 buff log book (at which time it was registered to MJ Fox of Leicestershire), and an old V5 from 1985. Fitted with a replacement engine in 1957, it is said to be complete and in reasonable condition overall, just needing some cosmetic TLC to restore it to it's former glory.
