Fifties estate cars are few and far between and the price of the larger British station wagons have risen beyond the dreams of avarice; this one, however, is a little more realistic and probably more practical.
It’s a 1960 Ford Zephyr MkII Estate, but it is an Australian import, which means it is also a little more attractive (the vertical C-pillar gives the car the little bit of grace the English version never had and badly needed) and it has a wind-down rear window (useful when loading children).
The car is basically sound, but will need some work. However, the rugged and simple Ford construction will make this relatively easy (and you can’t say that about a Bentley shooting brake). The engine also has the same attributes and responds well to tuning, which could make this car an interesting proposition on the road, in classic rallying, or as the ideal support vehicle for your classic competition car or motorcycle. The eagle-eyed among you will already have noted that the interior has been recently retrimmed.
What little is known of its earlier life indicates that the car only had one owner in Australia and that the mileage recorded (53,381) may be original. The car has not yet been registered in this country but does have an Australian log book and a NOVA reference so registration here should be straightforward using the usual channels.
