The 304 was a considerable hit for Peugeot and sold well over a million during its 21 years of production (1969-80). The peppy ohc 1,288cc four-cylinder engine and crisp Pininfarina styling were a perfect combination, especially when offered in Cabriolet format as with this 1974 model.
BHN 7N has the added appeal of the ‘S’ specification, taking the power output to 75bhp, which is 10bhp up on the standard model and 10bhp more than the MG Midget of the day. Peugeot produced nearly 19,000 Cabriolets, of which just 836 right-hand-drive models were brought to the UK - it is believed there are fewer than 20 on the road today.
BHN 7N is believed to have covered just under 58,000 miles and although this cannot be guaranteed, the overall condition of the car would support it. Sold as part of a deceased’s estate, the late owner’s son tells us that the car is in good all-round condition and runs well, but would probably benefit from some attention here and there. The car had its last MOT in August 2016 which it passed with no advisories and has only done 134 miles since then.
This pretty little Peugeot makes a refreshing alternative to an MG Midget and will appeal to those who feel that clambering out of the low-slung British alternative might be a little undignified. No doubt the quoted estimate will also appeal, being considerable less than an MG of similar condition – and when the relative sophistication of the Peugeot is taken into consideration, it really is a pas de tête, as the French (probably) say.
