This 1952 Old English white MG TD is a corking little car – and so it should be, it was restored by an experienced car restorer for his own use. Having put all that work into it, he finds he cannot bring himself to drive it and so it is offered for sale with only ten miles on the (reconditioned) speedo.

The car was brought over from America in 1989 (with no history of its life over the pond) and acquired by our vendor in 1995. Pressure of work meant he didn’t get round to restoring the car until 2016.

The car was stripped down to the bare chassis, shot-blasted, treated and painted. The bodywork was also attended to thoroughly and was mostly sound (believed to be ex-California), with only the bulkhead and door support woodwork needling replacement. The car also received a new rood and side-screens and new upholstery.

The suspension, steering, and brakes were overhauled and, as with many of the parts fitted elsewhere on the car, there are receipts on file for the components used. The car is still left-hand drive (did you notice that?) as it was made originally and makes the car ideal for Continental touring or – perish the though - re-export.

The engine was rebuilt and received a new cam and drive gear, pistons, bearings, crank re-grind etc. The engine was run during the photo-shoot and our man with an ear for these things says it did sound sweet and ticked-over beautifully. The engine is not a ‘matching numbers’ engine (and they were not all built that way) but it was the engine that came with the car when it came back from America.

The document file includes its V5C, customs documentation and “before and after” photographs plus lots of invoices. The car is now UK registered (XVV 741) and comes with a Heritage Trust letter confirming its original specification and identity.

This TD really is in tip-top condition and in need of nothing, except, perhaps, running-in. It is an extremely smart car ready for showing or – better still – trans-European adventures.
