A wise man (well, an American actually) once said a car is better than a home because you can always sleep in your car but you can’t drive your home. Pah! This Bedford Dormobile lets you do both.
It is, of course, a Martin Walter Dormobile, based on a 1969 Bedford CA van, Rather chic in its Burgundy and Old English White colour scheme, it has a highly desirable pop-top roof recently installed by specialists CA Mad, of Leominster.
HYJ 671G is a four berth camper (two up top, two using the seats folded flat), with sink, gas cooker, potty locker (!), and cooler. The speedo shows 7,900 miles and the MOT history confirms that that is the second time around.
The owner is a motor engineer who has not kept records of the work carried out or parts used but who intends to supply a schedule of work for the van in time for the auction. It is a going concern and has had much of the lower panel work replaced or repaired recently (photographs on file) and has had a replacement, high compression, lead-free cylinder head fitted in 2016. The braking system was also overhauled that year and the oil and filters changed earlier this year.
One for the classic camper fan, or the man for whom a VW is just a little too obvious, this 1969 Dormobile represents a time when the world was not in a hurry and a camper van had nothing but the kitchen sink. Who needs more?
