The original design of the MGA’s bodywork was largely based on a one-off TD race car built by privateer George Phillips for the 1951 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The TD chassis meant the driver sat too high so MG’s Syd Enever was called in to create a lower chassis with the side members set further apart and the floor attached to the bottom rather than the top of the frame sections. The body was also made more slippery and three of the resulting EX 182 prototypes were entered into the 1955 Le Mans, two of the cars finishing 12th and 17th overall, the other crashing out.
This set the path for future development and the MGA became a very popular race car, particularly in the USA where it proved one of the most successful entrants in Sports Car Club of America events, winning numerous regional and national championships and remaining a favourite with vintage racers to this day.
This 1957 MGA has been correctly and expensively prepared for the US vintage series and raced with success at many circuits including Watkins Glen. We are told that the rot-free shell has never been damaged and the chassis has been correctly built for the series and can also be used for many UK and European race series.
The engine is an all steel 1,650cc full-race unit with race cam, twin 1 3/4” SU carbs, tubular manifold, competition clutch and helical gearbox, all in good condition. It has expensive cast triple master cylinders, an ally radiator, fuel pressure gauge, alternator, foam-filled fuel cell with twin pumps etc. The back axle has been lowered and is fitted with a limited slip diff. Inside it has a Kirky ally race seat, roll cage, plumbed in extinguisher and battery isolator switch.
A lovely car that can be used as is with little modification and recommisioning for whichever series you wish to run in. LHD makes no difference on a circuit and it can be used in Europe too. An ideal mount for hillclimbs and sprints, it would also make an exciting road car although the exhaust may need a to be a little quieter! It comes with a US Cerificate of Title and HMRC papers showing that all taxes have been paid and UK registration will be straightforward using the requisite DVLA form.
