Despite producing some of the finest designs of the Edwardian period, Vauxhall was far from secure financially and fell into the clutches of General Motors in 1925. From then onwards the firm concentrated on solid, well-engineered models aimed at the middle classes. Re-structuring its range in the aftermath of the Depression, Vauxhall dropped the 2-litre Cadet - Britain’s first car with a synchromesh gearbox - in favour of the smaller Light Six.

Introduced in 1933, the newcomer came with either a 1,530cc 12hp (ASY) or 1,781cc 14hp (ASX) OHV six-cylinder engine. With a four-speed synchro box, cable operated brakes, 70mph top speed and 'no draught' ventilation, it proved an enormous success for Vauxhall, in excess of 23,000 being sold up to the end of 1934 when it was replaced by the 12hp DY and 14hp DX.

First registered in March 1934, this particular 14hp ASX had just one owner right up until 1984 and has only had three other keepers since. Obviously a much-loved machine, it appears to be in exceptionally good order throughout and has a delightfully patinated blue leather interior. In addition, the engine has just been fully rebuilt at a cost of some £2,000. In the history file there are various old MOTs going back to 1971 which show light but regular use and there is also a buff continuation log book dating from 1941. Altogether a lovely example of this quintessentially British pre-war saloon which looks excellent value at the guide price suggested today.
