The Austin 18 Windsor was the company’s answer to the demand for a formal limousine. By the time it had finished production 2,953 had been delivered. Using a smooth 2.5-litre six-cylinder side valve engine, the car was marketed on its high comfort levels.

Amongst other things, the publicity material of the time boasted “wing to wing vision” from the drivers seat – something that would no doubt come in handy thanks to its prodigious size. The passengers got wide doors, large windows, a low floor and separately adjustable front seats and variable rear seat positions for comfortable travel. At extra cost, occasional seats could be ordered and the upholstery could be specified in leather, moquette or Bedford cord.

First registered in Birmingham in late 1938, this imposing Windsor saloon is in very nice condition throughout with a beautifully preserved brown leather interior that appears to be largely original apart from the driver’s seat which has been sympathetically retrimmed at some time. The rear passenger compartment is particularly spacious with footrests for the back seat occupants and two occasional seats that fold away most ingeniously (once you have mastered the knack!).

There is very little history with the car but it went to Northern Ireland in 1986 and only returned to England earlier this year. The car is said to drive very well indeed with a lovely quiet engine and has just been issued with a fresh MOT. This is a most charming and practical old car that could probably earn a good living as a wedding car, but is equally suited to country picnics and trips to Goodwood with a gang of friends and a bootful of champagne!
