The Standard Motor Company was founded by R Maudslay on the simple principle that he wanted his products made from components that were tried and tested for reliability. They were amongst the top six manufacturers in the UK before the war and a very common sight on the roads of the period.

Their fortunes started to wane in the late vintage period and in 1929 Sir John Black was brought in from Hillman to try and turn things around. His first move was to develop new 9 and 10 horsepower models, an important market sector where Hillman had previously been poorly represented. This did the trick and these models carried the company through until 1935 when the more streamlined 'Flying' Standards made their debut.

The Standard Big Nine was manufactured between 1930 and 1933. Using a straightforward side valve 1,287cc engine and 3-speed gearbox, the whole vehicle, whilst obviously at the lower end of the market, gave a feeling of quality not shared by most of its counterparts.

This original 1932 example was supplied new through Glovers of Harrogate. Having been restored some time ago, it retains its delightful original leather interior and appears in sound condition throughout but has not been used for the last three years.  It now requires sympathetic re-commissioning to put it back on the road and has the potential to make a super, original example of this quality light car.
