Launched in 1982, the 190 'Baby Benz' was the most affordable model in the history of this illustrious German marque.

Over £600 million was spent researching and developing the car with Mercedes acutely aware that a failure of such an entry level model could easily bring down the rest of the range and the entire company’s reputation. The 190 was available with airbags, ABS brakes, seatbelt tensioners and other advanced safety features and is now regarded as one of the best Mercedes-Benz cars ever made. It was finally replaced by the much less impressive C-Class in 1993.

This 1984 2.0-litre automatic has covered just 64,500 miles from new. In its current family ownership for the last 24 years, it has seen very little use since the mid-naughties, having covered just 1,000 miles since 2004. MOTd until January 2015, it shows a few areas of corrosion to the front wings which, once sorted, will leave this clean and tidy example ready to add a digit to the front end of the odometer.

Don't be fooled by the humble value of these machines today - they are terrific cars in virtually all respects and we will all be kicking ourselves in a few years' time for not buying one when values were on the floor...
