Introduced in 1986, the XJ40 range was the most intensively researched car that Jaguar had ever launched and over £200m was invested in its production.

Test models clocked up 1.24 million miles in Arizona summer heat testing, 1.1 million miles in Canada winter testing, 1.8 million miles in Australia heat and dust testing, in addition to 750,000 miles on the high-speed Nardo circuit in Italy plus numerous other gruelling road and track tests.

All this hard work paid off and the car proved exceptionally reliable in use, easily holding its own against rival machines from BMW and Mercedes. A variety of engine sizes were available but amongst the most popular was the 3.6-litre DOHC 24-valve AJ6 unit which produced 221bhp and 240lb/ft of torque with excellent fuel economy and superb refinement.

This particular 3.6 has the rare and desirable 5-speed manual gearbox and has covered a mere 67,400 miles from new in the hands of just one owner. Built to Sovereign spec which added electric seats, leather upholstery, air conditioning, ABS and walnut trim, it was first registered in May 1989 and was initially leased from Central Garage Croydon as the personal car of a company director who was to transfer it into his own name after the first year of the lease was up.

Always properly maintained, it has seven service stamps in the book up to 61,279 miles in 1992 shortly after which it was put into storage to join a collection of fine classic cars that the owner has been fortunate enough to amass over the last few decades. Regularly started, run and moved to keep everything free, it was being thoroughly recommissioned by the vendor’s mechanic as the catalogue went to press and is due to have a fresh MOT before the sale.

Presented in black with a dark blue leather interior, it is in exceptionally good and original condition cosmetically and would make a worthy show car with very little effort. We are great fans of the XJ40 and this fabulous one-owner, low mileage example looks an absolute steal at the modest guide price suggested today.

CATALOGUE AMENDMENT: Now with 6 months Tax and MOT until February 2015. The vendor advises us that on the way to the sale the speedometer was erratic and the fuel guage sticks on 1/4 full, but adds that it drives beautifully and thinks these issues may well resolve themselves with a bit of use.
