To commemorate the 40th birthday of the legendary 300SL Roadster that had been unveiled to the world in 1957, Mercedes launched a limited edition version of its flagship model, the SL500, in 1997.
Called the Mercedes-Benz SL500 40th Anniversary Special Edition, just 500 cars were produced of which only 150 were in RHD. The cars had the same stonking 322bhp 160mph performance of the standard models but were packed with every conceivable extra and came in a range of special colours and trim options.
First registered in 1998, this particular car spent the first six years of its life in Jersey which helps account for its current low mileage of only 67,800 in the hands of just three owners. Special features include: Panaromic glass hardtop: metallic Designo Blue paintwork; Designo Grey soft hide interior: cruise control; climate control; anti-glare rear view mirror: electric memory seats, door mirrors and steering column; rear child seats; wood and leather steering wheel; Xenon headlights; rain sensor; walnut wood trim; wind-deflector; Mercedes special radio; boot-mounted CD changer; 18" AMG alloy wheels; four airbags and a 5-speed auto box.
It was purchased though us in 2008 at which point it had a full Mercedes-Benz service history from new and has subsequently been thoroughly spoilt by its new owner who has serviced and maintained the car through local specialists in Abergavenny and Ross-on-Wye. It is said to be in excellent condition throughout and to drive superbly with an MOT until March 2015 and is only being offered for sale due to lack of use, a fact supported by the minimal mileage accumulated over the last few years.
