The World War II Dodge WC series of light military trucks was based on their range of pre-war civilian commercials.
Initially available in a bewildering array of ½ tonners, the larger ¾ tonner soon joined the stable and was available as an ambulance, mobile workshop, weapons carrier, communication unit or a reconnaissance command car. Just 6,010 of the latter were ordered, the Generals at the time preferring the more nimble Jeep which was also less of an obvious target for the enemy during manoeuvres!
Weighing it at 2,560kgs (about the same as a modern Land-Rover Discovery!), their 92bhp 3,772cc side-valve six-cylinder engine provided more than adequate performance, an optional winch being available should the going get really sticky.
This superb 1942 WC57 winch-equiped model has the original and working Braden MU2 unit attached to the front. Rebuilt sometime in the 1980s, it was purchased some 15 years ago and has seen only occasional use since. Complete with map table and map pockets, it offers the perfect opportunity for its lucky new owner to mount their own invasion. Running and driving just as it should, there is nothing required but to get in and enjoy it.
Built in small numbers and with a low survival rate due to many leading hard lives as tow-truck conversions after the war, this super example is sure to join the top table at shows wherever it goes.
