Inspired by the straightforward and classically styled TVR 3000S, the new 280S model unveiled in 1986 was to remain the mainstay of TVR production while the company dallied with 'wedges' and outrageous supercars.
Conceived as their entry level model, it used the tried and trusted Ford 2.8-litre V6 from the 280i Wedge in a bodyshell developed from the outgoing 3000S, adding wind-up windows, a curvy dash and a split panel roof. Far more practical than anything that had gone before, its purity and simplicity won many friends. A 2.9-litre S2 version arrived on the scene when Ford changed their engine programme, the series culminating in the brutal Rover powered V8S, a classic British sportscar in the truest sense.
At launch, the press liked it very much, Fastlane Magazine commenting “dynamically it is indeed excellent, alive and friendly without being difficult” which summed it up exactly.
Presumably that is what the four owners of this 280S thought too. Described by the vendor as a nice straight example, it has 11 stamps in the service book and comes with four very good Dunlop SP Sport tyres. Due to have a fresh MOT by the time of the sale it is described as in good usable condition and is ready for the summer. Surely these fun and stylish classic British icons can’t remain at these prices for long.
