For the privateer in the mid-1970s who wanted to go sports car racing, and in particular compete successfully at the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans, there was really only one viable option, the Porsche 911 RSR.

Introduced in 1973, the RSR was a factory-built racing car based on the outstanding Carrera RS 2.7 chassis. These were not converted street cars, but rather purpose built competition models designed and built from the ground up for serious racing use. In 1974 the factory made significant changes to the car including a new 3.0-litre engine, wider wheels with centre lock hubs, wider wheel arches, a wider front air dam and air intake and an enormous rear wing. The result was a car that would dominate the GT category and challenge for overall wins around the world. Only 55 were made and the last one to be sold publicly made over £500,000.

First registered in January 1985, this particular car started out in life as a standard Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera. The current owner acquired the car in 2007 and has since transformed it into the stunning RSR recreation you see today, the work taking over two years to complete.

Once stripped to a bare shell, the existing bodywork was fully restored and rust-proofed with new inner panels, kidney bowls, sills etc. and an RSR body kit professionally fitted at a cost of over £10,500 (invoice on file). We are informed that the engine and 5-speed gearbox were also rebuilt, along with a new clutch, new heat exchangers and a race exhaust although not all the bills for this work have been retained. A race-type centre-fill fuel tank has also been installed.

Inside the car has been fitted with new Recaro seats, FIA-approved 4-point harnesses, lightweight carpets, leather headlining and a full roll cage. New brake discs and pads have been fitted all round and the car rides on a new set of BBS magnesium ultra-lightweight racing split rims shod with new Michelin TB15 Racing tyres.

MOTd until June, the car is fully road legal but would also make a very exciting trackday tool. We have driven it around the yard at Brightwells and can confirm that it feels very lively indeed and makes a truly epic sound through its race exhaust! A thrilling machine in all respects, it is certainly not for the shy and retiring...
