Mercedes-Benz launched its redoubtable W124 series in 1985, and in thorough German fashion used the platform to create a four-door estate and saloon as well as a two-door coupe and convertible.
The design was both over-engineered and forward thinking, incorporating such features as the multi-link rear axle which would be integrated into many car designs in the coming years.
The model series used its plastic mouldings to streamline airflow beneath the car, reducing fuel consumption and wind noise – and incidentally creating one of the lowest drag coefficients of any vehicle of the time (0.28). Such aerodynamic efficiency helps the 188bhp 3.0-litre straight-six engine hit 60mph in 8.5 seconds and push on to a top speed of 137mph.
The W124 series is renowned for its tremendous high mileage capability and general resilience. The estate models especially have attained a cult following, with the coupes – probably the most attractive of the family – now catching them up in demand.
This 1992-built 300CE presents very well in metallic blue with grey leather. Well appointed, it offers all the expected marque comforts with electric front seats and sunroof and a quality hi-fi. A Tracker theft recovery system is also fitted.
This is a ‘pillarless’ design, so all the side windows descend into the doors and bodywork without any frames remaining. With these down and the big sunroof open, the driver has the next best thing to a convertible.
The car has covered a considerable mileage – 221,800 – but as the appearance attests, it has been well looked after and these cars are designed to go on for ever. The present owner of 18 years has had the vehicle serviced every year by JD Automotive in Ludlow. In 2010 the car underwent a full respray, at which time the front wings were also replaced. It has also recently had new rear springs fitted.
This daily driver does have its niggles; a number of dashboard lights aren’t functioning and the air-conditioning isn’t working. Mechanically however, it is reported to be very sound and to drive well. MOTd to September and taxed to the end of this month, it is ready for immediate use and is being offered here with no reserve so someone could grab a bargain.
