Launched in 1967 as a replacement for the much-loved Austin-Healey 3000, the MGC signally failed to convince the string-back-gloved Big Healey fan club.

However, as when the Jaguar XJS replaced the E-Type, the people queuing up to throw tomatoes completely forgot to acknowledge what a fine car it was when judged on its own merits, not those of a fondly remembered predecessor.

With its gutsy 3-litre six-cylinder engine, purposeful bonnet bulge and classic Sydney Enever-styled good looks, it made for a fine high speed tourer (especially when fitted with modern suspension and tyres), with a genuine 120mph top speed. Only in production for two years, the MGC is highly sought after today and commands higher prices than its four-cylinder siblings.

Proving that it could inspire just as much loyalty as any Big Healey, this particular MGC Roadster had just one owner from new until his death in 2009 when ownership transferred to his brother. A September 1969 model, it was treated to a major restoration in 1992 at a cost of some £9,500, the whole process being recorded on photographs in the history file. Complete with a hard top and some nice period alloys, it was also treated to a new hood, stainless steel exhaust, new core plugs and sundry other items in 2003.

Little used in the last five years apart from annual runs to the MOT station, its current ticket expires in June 2015 and a new battery has just been fitted. It has suffered somewhat cosmetically from being left outside under a tarpaulin, but there is clearly still a good car under there which should respond well to some tender loving care. It is due to be driven some 40 miles to the sale.
