MG launched the handsome ‘B’ in 1962; initially as a roadster, a coupe version following in late 1965.
Abingdon’s new model used a stiff monocoque shell, replacing the outmoded body-on-chassis design of its predecessor, the MGA. The engine was essentially the same, but was enlarged to 1798cc, the motor now giving a respectable 95bhp and a healthy 110 ft lb of torque. The ‘B’ series engine was further improved in 1965 when the crankshaft was changed from a three- to a five-bearing design.
The MGB in all its forms proved to be a practical and fine handling car, one which owners found easy and enjoyable to live with, becoming one of the stalwarts of the British classic scene.
This overdrive equipped British Racing Green MGB roadster was first registered in October 1969 and has been owned by its present keeper for the last seven years. During this time, it has averaged just 800 miles a year and has only been used in dry weather.
Fitted with a good hood and tonneau, the interior has been retrimmed in black leather which includes a rear seat and the car has been fitted with a Motolita steering wheel. The chrome wire wheels have new spinners, the accompanying large file of paperwork showing that the car has recently had new rear dampers, a replacement water pump, alternator, battery and a top-end rebuild. Just last winter, the vendor also had the front suspension overhauled, including new bushes, discs, pads, shock absorbers, wheel bearings and calipers. The car is MOTd until August.
This is a robust and well-cared for example of one of our most popular classics; a ‘chrome bumper’ MGB Roadster in a good colour having had much recent expenditure. What’s not to like.
