The Mercedes-Benz R230 Series SL was introduced in 2001 and was the fifth generation of the German uber-manufacturer’s flagship SL Roadster model.
The first of the company’s full-sized roadsters to use a retractable folding steel roof, it was initially available only in 5-litre V8 form, although 5.4 (AMG), 6.0 and 3.5-litre models would later join the range.
All were mightily impressive machines and no sane person could really ask for more performance than the original 5-litre model offered. Capable of ballistic pace when required, it also excelled as a sybaritic cruiser and there can be few finer ways to cross a continent.
This relatively early 2003 SL500 has only covered 45,871 miles, with a reassuring Mercedes main dealer service history that comprises four stamps to date, the last only 1,700 miles ago. It has had only three keepers, the current lady owner having enjoyed it since 2006, and is fitted with the optional rear seats.
Described as being in excellent condition both inside and out, it is the fourth SL that this fortunate lady has owned and has spent an easy last few years pottering around the lanes of Shropshire. Supplied with all its original handbooks, first aid kit and two keys, we are informed that the only known fault is the central locking which does not operate remotely but only with the key.
Taxed and tested until the end of September, it is only being sold because a fifth SL is now on its way to the lucky lady who feels it is only fair that someone else should now get a chance to see what her SL obsession is all about. It would be rude to rebuff her generous offer, especially at the modest guide price suggested, so please stick your hand up and you too may be bitten by the infectious SL bug.
