Matchless and it's sister company made their first twin cylinder machine as the 500cc G9, but the burgeoning Amercan market place was calling for more power so the design was initially stretched to 600cc with the G11 and then to 650cc as the G12.
This model was designed by Phil Walker who achieved the increase by lengthening the cylinder stroke to 79.3mm while leaving the cylinder bore at the 72mm used by the 600cc version.
Initial problems with crank failure were addressed with a change of materials to prevent cracking, and the cylinder head and pistons were re-designed for 1960. A new primary case was also designed for this model to enable the use of a Lucas alternator in place of the original dynamo.
The bike offered here was first registered on15/5/1959 and according to the Matchless Owners’ Club dating certificate provided, is a matching engine and frame number machine. In original and un-restored condition, it is offered with V5C and old MOT and tax disc dating from 2011 when it was last used. Some recommissioning and checks are thus advised before use.
