Alec Issigonis’ iconic Mini was launched in 1959 and was to have a profound effect on the future design of the car. Brilliant packaging of engine and gearbox allowed 80% of the vehicle’s footprint to be used for passengers and luggage. It soon became apparent that the Mini was also huge fun to drive, and its go-kart like handling was very effective in competition.

John Cooper, a friend of Issigonis, persuaded him to allow development of a competition version, and the Mini Cooper made its debut in 1961 with a 997cc long-stroke engine. This was supplanted in 1964 with the 998cc unit. The standard output of 34bhp increased to 55bhp, and the twin SUs and close ratio gearbox made for a very successful formula. A shorter stroke higher power 'S' version was added, primarily for circuit racing.

Not just an unlikely winner on track, the car soon took control of the rally scene too, the marvellous Mini winning the Monte Carlo Rally from 1964-1967. Having won in 1966, they were infamously disqualified because of an irregularity in the lighting system. However the ensuing rumpus produced more positive publicity than the company could have hoped for and the moral victory was theirs.

This beautifully prepared 1972 model started out as a regular Mini 1000. Mechanically it has been bored out to 1,330cc, the engine having been upgraded to a belt-driven camshaft and fitted with ‘Titan’ roller rockers. It has a ‘long centre branch’ exhaust manifold and Weber carburettor. Power is transmitted through a 4-pin diff and straight cut drop gears, the engine being protected by a full sump guard.

The car sits on new Minilite-style wheels, while the rear suspension is adjustable and the front brakes have been upgraded to vented discs. A bolt-in cage, harnesses and a whole range of thoughtful and practical pockets have been added for stage rallying whilst twin fuel tanks extend the range and add that nice ‘Cooper S’ touch. It will carry a 12 month MOT by the time of the sale, although the vendor informs us that it is not currently taxed.

This very nicely presented car is available at a mere fraction of its build cost. An ideal mount in which to enter the ever-growing classic rally scene, or a fantastic way to travel cross-country to your favourite pub, either way an ‘ear to ear’ grin is guaranteed.
